Creating a Fee in FeeBee
Introduction
With FeeBee you can create additional charges that are automatically added to your customers’ orders. These fees can be a fixed amount (for example, €2.00) or a percentage amount (for example, 5% of the product price).
Every fee you set up will be represented in Shopify by one or more hidden products that FeeBee creates in the background. These products are required so that the fee works consistently at checkout, in draft orders, and in Shopify POS.
Depending on how you configure the fee, it can either be bundled directly with the product or displayed as a separate line item in the cart. This article explains all available options and walks you through the fee creation form step by step.
Creating a Fee
To add a new fee, go to the Fees section of the FeeBee app and click Create Fee. This will open the fee creation form.
Name
The name you enter here will be shown to your customers at checkout. It should describe the fee clearly and simply. Examples include “Bottle Deposit” or “Handling Charge.”
Amount
You can choose whether the fee should be a Fixed Amount or a Percentage Amount:
- A Fixed Amount adds the same charge regardless of product price (for example, €0.25 per bottle).
- A Percentage Amount calculates the fee as a percentage of the product’s price (for example, 5% of a €100 product = €5.00 fee).
This value determines the price of the fee product that FeeBee creates in Shopify.
Status
Each fee can be either Active or Paused.
- When a fee is active, it will be applied according to the rules you set.
- If you pause it, it will remain in your list but won’t be applied until you reactivate it.
This is useful if you want to temporarily pause a fee without deleting it.
Markets
FeeBee supports Shopify Markets. By default, fees apply to all markets, but you can restrict a fee to one or more specific regions. This is especially helpful if you only need to charge a fee in certain countries, for example, applying a bottle deposit in Germany but not in the United States.
Type of Fee
One of the most important settings is the Type of Fee, because it determines how the fee is displayed to the customer and how it behaves in Shopify.
Bundle with product (recommended)
When you choose Bundle with product, the fee is merged with the main product at checkout. The customer sees the main product’s line, and in supported themes they can expand it to view the fee breakdown.
Because Shopify handles this as a product bundle at checkout, it works across themes for checkout, draft orders, and POS, and supports express checkout. Cart-page fee breakdown still depends on your theme and display settings. Discounts applied to the product will also apply to the fee.
Typical use case: fees that are directly tied to a product, such as bottle deposits or environmental surcharges.
Bundle with fees
When you choose Bundle with fees, the fee appears as a separate line item in the cart and checkout. All such fees are grouped under a special product called “Fees.”
FeeBee automatically creates this “Fees” product in your Shopify Admin. This product is required and cannot be deleted, but you may change its title and image to better fit your store’s style. The price, however, is controlled by FeeBee and must not be edited manually.
This option requires the FeeBee Script. Product-page accelerated checkout buttons are supported when they submit the standard Shopify product form, because FeeBee adds the parent “Fees” product before checkout starts. If a custom button bypasses the product form entirely, test it before going live. For draft orders, add the parent “Fees” product manually. In Shopify POS, use the POS Fees tile; it automatically adds or removes the parent product when the POS cart changes. Discounts applied to products will not affect these fees.
Typical use case: fees that should be displayed clearly as separate charges, such as tariffs or payment method surcharges.
Conditions
Conditions allow you to control when a fee applies, based on customer tags in Shopify.
You can set conditions such as:
- Customer tag includes – the customer must have a specific tag.
- Customer tag does not include – the fee applies if the customer does not have the tag (this is always true for guest checkouts).
All conditions are combined with AND logic, meaning every condition must be satisfied before the fee is applied.
This gives you flexibility to create rules like charging fees only to wholesale customers or excluding VIP customers.
For detailed setup instructions and examples, see our full guide on Fee Conditions.
Apply To
This section controls how often the fee is applied.
-
Apply once per product (default)
The fee is applied to each unit of the product. For example, if a bottle deposit is €0.25 and a customer buys three bottles, they will be charged €0.75 in deposits.
-
Apply once per cart
The fee is applied only once per order, regardless of how many products are in the cart. For example, a single €1.50 handling fee could be added to the cart.
⚠️ Important: The “Apply once per cart” option is only available when you use Bundle with fees.
Applies To
You can choose which products the fee applies to:
- All products
- Specific products or variants
- Collections (applies to all products in the selected collections)
This flexibility allows you to target fees precisely. For example, if the fee applies universally, choose All products. If it only applies to a specific category, choose the relevant collection instead.
Display in Cart & Checkout
These options let you control how fees are shown to customers. They don’t affect how the fee is calculated.
-
Cart: Show fee amount below main product
Ensures the fee is shown underneath the product on the cart page, even in themes that don’t fully support bundles.
-
Checkout: Show fee amount below fees
Makes sure that in checkout, each bundled fee is listed transparently so customers can see how the total price was calculated.
Important Notes
For every fee, FeeBee creates at least one hidden product in Shopify. This product is used internally to handle pricing and bundling.
- For bundle with product, one fee product is created per fee.
- For bundle with fees, an additional parent product called “Fees” is created. This product is required and must never be deleted.
You may safely change the image, SKU, and similar merchandising fields of fee products, but the actual price and fee logic must always be managed inside FeeBee. For the parent “Fees” product used by Bundle with fees, you may also change the title and image, but the product must remain published where FeeBee needs to add it.
Saving and Managing Your Fee
Once you’ve completed the form, click Save. Your new fee will appear in the FeeBee fee list. From there, you can edit, activate, pause, or delete it at any time.
Active fees will automatically apply to the products, collections, and markets you selected.
